Since we were in Hokkaido in winter, we just had to allocate at least a day or two for skiing and snowboarding. Anyway what is Hokkaido in winter without skiing? So we decided on Furano as it is known as the powder snow heaven for skiers and snowboarders. We stayed at the Hotel Naturwald which is just opposite the Furano Ski Resort so it is very convenient. For families with kids, this is a good kids-friendly hotel to stay.
The moment we stepped into hotel, we could see why it is kids-friendly. The interior is nicely decorated. Kids can choose their own slippers. You can also choose from a range of pillows if the one in your room does not suit you. There is also a snack corner at the lobby where guests can eat and drink all you can there. The most important part is the buffet spread. I must say the food was fantastic. You get a whole range of Japanese and western food, including unlimited ikura (salmon roe), steak, etc. Being a kids-friendly hotel, there is also a kids corner where they can help themselves to various food and drinks meant for children.
After that, if you still have space in your stomach, there is a dessert buffet in another room. The spread was also amazing. They have chocolate fondue, soft cream and various pastries available, not forgetting the free beer outside.
After a day of skiing, while waiting for dinner, there is also a kids play area. For adults, there is a library beside where you can read the books there or just relax. Washing machines and dryers are also available.
Though the price was higher than other hotels, we were very satisfied with our stay here and will not hesitate to choose this hotel again if we were to come back to Furano next time. Link at the bottom of the page.
Furano Ski Resort has 2 zones, Furano Zone and Kitanomine Zone.
The Furano Zone is where the New Furano Prince Hotel is whereas the Kitanomine Zone has the Furano Prince Hotel. The Furano Zone has the Family Snow Land where you can enjoy snow activities like Snowmobile, Snow Banana Boat, Snow Rafting, sledding and more. The Furano Kan Kan Mura is also located next to New Furano Prince Hotel. This is a night fantasy event in winter which starts at 4pm and you can enjoy activities like snow tubing, snow chutes as well as bar and café.
For those looking to learn skiing, English instructors are available at the ski schools at both zones. Reservation is highly recommended. Links at the bottom of the page.
About 3 minutes drive from the hotel is a small shop called Furano Delice that sells various delicious pastries, sweets and soft cream, all made with locally- produced milk and cheese.
Japanese pastries have seldom disappointed me and this is no exception. Though it was super cold outside, we still went for the soft cream which was thick and good and we had no regrets.
